Giving Tuesday Donations

For Giving Tuesday, Little Known Help Zone conducted some civic engagement and gave to a variety of causes near and dear to our mission. These ranged from community to globally, and a diverse number of causes received support.

Jaguar Rescue Center- Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

This is a cause we have worked with extensively in the past (read our posts) and wanted to send a bit more love down there. This organization is doing incredible work with jungle animals in Costa Rica, and we’ve seen first hand how meaningful their work is.

Voices for Biodiversity

This is an anthropological organization that supports biodiversity and cultural diversity through global endeavors, preserving the vital ecology of our earth.

TechGirlz

This great group teaches tech and STEM skills to young girls from underprivileged communities, inspiring passion and helping enrich and mentor young women that may not have the resources.

Allentown Food Bank

This local organization feeds Allentown’s hungry, what more can we say than we want to give back to the community that has made this organization a reality.

Look Good Feel Better

This organization gives women undergoing chemo makeup and classes so that while they are working on getting better, they can feel beautiful.

Did you give back this year for Giving Tuesday? Let us know who you contributed to!

Animals in Distress

top-left[1]After a delightful trip to Costa Rica, I sent a thank you to Petmeds for the donations and was pleasantly surprised. They offered to send more donation boxes for me to give out. This time, I wanted to focus on my own community, so after researching, I chose the delightful Animals in Distress.

Animals in Distress is a local pet sanctuary that keeps every animal received, provides medical care and love, and also works on finding these pets homes. This is a no-kill shelter, which is one of the main reasons I chose them. I respect their mission quite much, and this place is an area of love and happiness. The sanctuary is spacious and bright, the animals are in a great place with loving volunteers and spacious rooms. Certain animals, such as Spook, who is paralyzed, have special accommodations   (The Spook Mobile is adorable!)

After receiving the donations, I sorted through to organize and examine the contents. Over $500 dollars worth of supplies were sent, from medicines to treats to toys! My dad took me to AID and we were pleasantly greeted by the workers. The facility is beautiful and all of the volunteers are friendly and welcoming. They were very appreciative and we also got a tour of the cat kennel! Every single cat was beautiful and you could tell each had its own personality. One feature that truly made me happy was the spaciousness of the rooms. There were rooms for the cats that each went off into a sunnier room with bird feeders outside. Rather than be caged, they were free to roam around their room and do cat-like things. I am so happy to have been able to contribute to this wonderful organization and I can’t wait to volunteer and work with them in the future.animals-in-distress[1]

Volunteering in Puerto Viejo: The Jaguar Rescue Experience

My vacation in Puerto Viejo took me on many adventures, but on June 22nd, I embraced my true passion and saw months of work brought to life. Prior to leaving for Costa Rica, I engaged in a multi month collection of veterinary supplies for the Jaguar Rescue in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. My organization was highly successful; over seven hundred dollars worth of supplies was gathered thanks to the generous contributions of three companies. 1-800 Pet Meds was one of the kind donors who graciously supplied the majority of veterinary care, I highly suggest you check them out here for great prices and wonderful service for all your pet needs!

My family and I took a cab ride to the refuge and arrived on time for the 11:30 tour. Due to power outages and other communication hindrances, the private showing did not work out. In order to keep the facility up and running, a fifteen dollar donation I requested to see the work they are doing. While paying our donation, I dropped off the bags of supplies behind the desk and the lady promised to find the owners for me to meet and speak to.

Our tour was with a lovely woman named Daniela; she was thorough, kind, intelligent, informative, and interesting. We were shown the various facilities and informed of the methods used to take care of the animals. Also, we were told the story of each animal at the refuge. All of the stories were equally touching and I could spend hours recounting the touching anecdotes. What sets the refuge apart from similar concept facilities is their reintroduction effort. Most of the animal refuges keep the animals for life after taking them in. At the Jaguar Rescue, the utmost effort is taken to try and reintroduce the animals to their natural habitat. The work done at this center is incredible and inspiring.

As we were nearing the end of our tour, I was given the opportunity to meet the owners. They are such kind hearted people and very sweet. I got a picture taken with them and an adorable monkey, then we finished the tour. The jaguar rescue was an incredible experience and I very much enjoyed the trip. I suggest trying to visit the refuge and see the incredible work yourself. I want to thank all of the donors again for their contributions, because this project couldn’t have been done without them.

Final Preparation

As the days trickle down, my house has become more and more hectic. Scrambling around, packing, and tying up loose knots are all occurring in these final hours. Just today, I’ve created forms to use for a school project and I am running around trying to find a perfect camera to use and document my trip. Hopefully, I’ll be able to create a video with some Costa Rican scenes.

I’ve been in contact with the refuge, but the exact date I will be visiting hasn’t been determined. I will most likely give them a call on the hotel’s one phone and organize the date then.

While this trip certainly has humanitarian purposes, there will also be some vacation time as well. We will go hiking, surfing, shopping, eating, and to a chocolate factory! Oh boy!

With all of the final donations together, it is time for me to pack them into two concise bags (check and carry on). I have much left to do, but I wanted to check in just to share the final details before I leave.

I won’t be able to post anything before I leave or while I am gone, but once I am home I will post pictures and stories galore! Stay helpful!

(And if perhaps you’d like something to do while I am gone, check out my etsy store etsy.com/shop/littleknownhelpzone )

**While on the topic of etsy, I will be picking up some handmade goods from locals down in Costa Rica that will be listed on my etsy page!

Meyenberg Goat’s Milk

Tower of Donated Cans
Tower of Donated Cans

Hello! Right now, I am in the final preparation mode for my trip to Costa Rica. To my pleasant surprise, I received a phone call a few days ago about an incoming package. On Thursday, the ackage came and it was a donation from Meyenberg! I was so excited and shocked, as Meyenberg Goat’s Milk was the first and most important item on my list.

I received 6 cans of milk, which will provide great relief for the refuge. These cans will go far in helping the animals. Also, I received a cute little note and some reading material, also recipes to try with goat’s milk.

These six cans will be accompanying me on my trip and will be donated to the Jaguar Rescue Center. The milk is used to prepare the orphans bottles of milk since they no longer can receive milk from their mothers. It is very expensive and difficult to purchase directly in Costa Rica, so the refuge relies on the donations. I am overwhelmed by Meyenberg’s kindness and generosity. They are a wonderful company to work with and I thoroughly suggest checking out their website! http://meyenberg.com/

A Little About the Refuge

I am just about ready to leave for the refuge, but I figured I would make a post about the organization I have chosen to aid.

The Jaguar Rescue is located in Playa Chiquita in the southern Caribbean portion of Costa Rica. They rehabilitate injured or mistreated animals and then reintroduce them to their natural environment. It was born in 2008 and is not considered a zoo, instead a rehabilitation center. They are also trying to develop a proper wild animal education that is beneficial to everyone’s future. They use a hands on approach which has been very successful with the animals. Over 400 animals have been returned to the jungle. Animal guests include birds, monkeys, jaguars, and other mammals/reptiles. The name originated from the baby jaguar they received in 2007 which unfortunately, the preserve and their work stands in her honor.

The Jaguar Rescue is a touching organization with great roots and a great mission. As soon as I stumbled upon this organization, I knew it was the one I wanted to help. I am highly looking forward to aiding the organization and visiting these great people. I suggest checking out the Jaguar Rescue and possibly donating or finding your way to help.

Donation from Northeast Fleece

Thank you for your generosity!
Thank you for your generosity!

Little Known Help Zone’s most recent project involves the Costa Rican Jaguar Rescue Center, an animal refuge centered in Puerto Viejo that takes care of injured and orphaned animals and makes effort to rehabilitate them back into the wild . For my 16th birthday, I will be visiting Costa Rica and volunteering at the refuge for a portion of my trip. The reserve is in need of some supplies, so Little Known Help Zone has made it their goal to collect this supplies to deliver on the trip. Needs include fleece blankets, electric blankets, powdered  goats milk, and medications.

After minimal success with attempts to collect donations, a wonderful surprise came in the mail. Northeast Fleece, a fleece  company based in Massachusetts, sent a package of 6 fleece blankets after I sent an email to their headquarters. These blankets are needed for the young animals of the refuge who have the potential of getting hypothermia since they no longer have the warmth of their mothers. The fleece blankets provide warmth and comfort. This donation will make all the difference for the refuge.

Little Known Help Zone would like to send a big thanks to Northeast Fleece for their generosity.

Stay tuned for continued information about the preliminary supplies collection and the trip itself.
