The Little Known Help Zone Spring 2017 semester was a busy and successful one here at Bryn Mawr College. We had some great events, and here is a round up of the accomplishments of the club this semester.
-Hosted a Guatemalan Tea Study Hour around midterms to provide a relaxing environment and introduce students to the tea of the Chirepeco cooperative, one organization we are supporting.
-Had the Deputy Consul of the Consulate of Philadelphia-Mexico, come for a speaking event with the Bryn Mawr Community
-Sell candygrams for May Day, selling fair trade ethical organic chocolate and raising over $50 for labor rights in Central America.
To end the semester of our labor rights advocating, Little Known Help Zone sold candy grams for May Day that were delivered in people’s mailboxes. The chocolate we sold was fair trade and organic and also benefited endangered animals. We made over $50 that will be donated to ORMUSA, a women’s labor rights organization in El Salvador.
To put together the candygrams, we had an end of the year party to celebrate our accomplishments with some chinese food.
We hope to have more successful fundraisers in the following semesters to continue to contribute to human rights causes in Central America.
Want to support Little Known Help Zone’s efforts in promoting fair labor in Central America? Consider buying a fair trade chocolate candygram for a friend or yourself and supporting a good cause!
For May Day, we are selling fair trade milk chocolate bars for $3, delivered in your mailbox or in a friend’s on 4/28, just in time for May Day! All money goes to ORMUSA and Chirrepeco Tea Cooperative, funding labor rights training and paid maternity leave.
On march 14th, Little Known Help Zone will be hosting a great event with a speaker, Rocio Vasquez from the Philadelphian Mexican Consulate. Rocio will be coming with some members from the protection agency to talk about how they work as an organization to protect worker’s rights in Philadelphia through an informal dialogue.
We are so grateful for these speakers donating their time, and the event will be catered with light snacks and refreshments.
We hope you can make it to Bryn Mawr College, Dalton 300 @ 4:00 PM on march 14th.
On March 1st, Little Known Help Zone held their first event for the Spring Semester promoting labor rights and equality in Central America. This study hour featured light food and Tea from the Chirrepeco Cooperative, a Guatemalan tea coop that practices unionization and voting rights, as well as fair wages and women’s empowerment. The even was a great way to unwind and study for midterms while supporting a great cause and reflecting on fair labor practices!
This semester, Bryn Mawr’s Little Known Help Zone had some great accomplishments. We can’t wait to put the money we made to good use and donate next semester, we raised over $200!
-Hosted our second annual yoga class event and raffle, spreading relaxation and positivity while raffling off a Mom’s Organic Market.
-Held a bingo event that shared information about human rights in Central America and gave away amazing prizes, including a donation of a membership to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute.
-Posted a banner in the campus center, asking for students to reflect on what they are thankful for around Thanksgiving while spreading the word about our organization
-Had a stand at the Staff Association Craft Fair, selling recycled gifts for the holidays.

Finishing off the year strong, this was the second time we had a stand at the Bryn Mawr Staff Association craft fair. This is a wonderful event that really brings the community together. We sold items that are on the Etsy shop (that will be up and running again soon) and had a really successful time getting the word out. Here is a picture of our set up, and stay tuned for an end of the semester update, as well as what is to come next semester!
We would also like to thank a Public Speaking Class at Penn State University for their choice to make a class donation to Little Known Help Zone.
