Immigrant Rights Speaker-3/28

thumbnail_image4.jpgOn Tuesday, 3/28, Rocio Vasquez from the Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia came to Bryn Mawr College to talk about her work at the consulate, what she does during the day, and how they are working to protect immigrants in the area. The consulate does amazing work with labor rights, family law, criminal law, and health services.

The event was a casual, conversational environment with a q/a session, and there was a large turnout including faculty and staff. The event will also be covered by the Bryn Mawr website.

We thank Rocio for coming and sharing her perspectives, and we look forward to getting involved with the Mexican consulate in the future to help promote human rights here and abroad.

Second Annual LKHZ Bryn Mawr Yoga Event

IMG_8312

Come out on September 28th at 5:00 PM in the Cloisters for an outdoor yoga class to enjoy the weather as we transition into fall. The class is “Donate What You Can, Leave With a Lifted Heart.” Class is taught by BMC Alum Alexandra Seits ’16.
Rain location is New Dorm Second Common Room!

This is the second time LKHZ has hosted a yoga event on Bryn Mawr’s Campus and the 4th Yoga event ever through LKHZ.
Yoga is an influential aspect of Central American culture, and as we raise awareness for human rights in Central America, we want to embrace positivity and spread the word. Yoga in Central America is not a common association, but through the past twenty years has grown more common and has been adopted for a variety of uses. In addition to yoga bringing in tourism money to provide jobs and resources to local people, yoga has powerful effects in other contexts. Schools, orphanages, and shelters are implementing yoga as an option for students and those facing troubles to relieve troubles, balance energy, and brighten outlooks. Also, free yoga classes are common for Honduran children looking for relief from internal conflicts such as the drug wars. In situations where workers are kept in uncomfortable positions for long periods of time, such as Salvadoran coffee sorters, yoga has been a small step in the fight for better worker’s rights to provide a healthy and positive break from the work. Yoga is an activity in Central America that promotes positivity, peace, and harmony.

Support Little Known Help Zone by visiting us when we table 11:30-3:30 on Thursday in the Campus Center and 5-7 Monday in Erdman selling raffle tickets to win a $25 gift card to Mom’s Organic Market! Tickets are 1/$1, 6/$5, 15/$10. All money will go to human rights causes in Central America.

The event will have healthy snacks, the hour long yoga class, and the raffle drawing!

Event sponsored by BMC SGA.

In Mexico- Book Delivery!

While in Mexico this past week, LKHZ donated a large bag of books to KKIS, Keeping Kids in School. This organization donates large amounts of school supplies (over 2,000 bags) to students in Mexican schools, as well as a box of supplies for the teachers. These English library books, donated by Salisbury Middle School last year during a trip to El Salvador, will help children practice reading English at school and also serves as a great exposure to younger kids.

Check out KKIS to learn more about their amazing work!

Volunteering In Mexico

LKHZ will be traveling to Mexico in a few weeks and making sure to give back while in the area. When in Playa del Carmen, LKHZ will be donating the remaining book donations from last year’s trip to Keep Kids in School Project (KKIS). This organization works hard to both keep kids in school and educate them in English. The English books will be great practice to read.

Also while there, LKHZ will be helping to pack backpacks of school supplies for once the school season resumes in Fall. Stay tuned for pictures from the visit, as well as upcoming projects!

Julio Cesar Sponsorship for 2016

It’s time again for Mayan Children Sponsorships so they can go to school, and Little Known Help Zone has responsored the past sponsored student Julio Cesar to continue for another year of school. This was made possible by generous donations during Bryn Mawr events and through speaking at PETE&C. For $360, Julio will attend school for another year and further his education which would otherwise be impossible.

If you remember, LKHZ has sponsored two students in the past, including Julio Cesar. The other student, Brenda, is graduating this year, but Julio still has a few years in high school to go. LKHZ also donated a bed to Julio’s family in December.

Once Julio finishes school, LKHZ will stop student sponsorships for the moment to create a more comprehensive program that is more inclusive of children in need rather than of specific students.
