Trip to Nicaragua

The past week, Little Known Help Zone had the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua and meet with two organizations located in Granada.

We first visited Puedo Leer Biblioteca, a quaint, adorable library with the most enjoyable reading space and the kindest people. We donated rewards for incentivized reading and books in Spanish.

The next day, we stopped by La Esperanza Granda to donate a variety of books, craft supplies, and school supplies.

It was wonderful collaborating with new organizations and meeting the people of Nicaragua.

Donations for Nicaraguan Children’s Organizations

In just a week, Little Known Help Zone will be in Granada, Nicaragua, meeting with organizations for future collaborations and will also be delivering supplies!

First is Puedo Leer Library. The library is a wonderful organization that has several library locations and works to put locations and book cabinets in rural schools. We will be donating spanish language books and small prize rewards to encourage their reading program. Learn more at http://www.puedoleerlibrary.com/

We also will be donating to La Esperanza Granada. This organization works with children to improve education and their lives. We will be donating workbooks, clothes, toys, and school crafting supplies. Read more at http://www.la-esperanza-granada.org/.

Student Sponsorship-Year 3-Julio

Little Known Help Zone just sponsored our student Julio for his 3rd year of school through Mayan Families.

Julio is a bright young boy studying accounting and doing incredibly well. We are excited to see his potential, and any further donations to help out him, his mother, and 4 siblings would be incredibly helpful.

We are still waiting to hear how he and his family is doing after his misfortunate period of energy lapse and malnutrition and will keep you updated.

Call for Help- Julio

If you remember, Little Known Help Zone sponsored Julio Ruiz’s school for 2 years, and also purchased a bed for his family.

We were just made aware that Julio has been suffering medically due to malnutrition, and although Little Known Help Zone has been helping out, the more aid his family receives, the better.

If you are interested in sponsoring food for Julio’s family, go to https://www.mayanfamilies.org/donate/simple  and specify your donation for student number #2684. Any bit helps, and we thank you for your support of Julio!

In Mexico- Book Delivery!

While in Mexico this past week, LKHZ donated a large bag of books to KKIS, Keeping Kids in School. This organization donates large amounts of school supplies (over 2,000 bags) to students in Mexican schools, as well as a box of supplies for the teachers. These English library books, donated by Salisbury Middle School last year during a trip to El Salvador, will help children practice reading English at school and also serves as a great exposure to younger kids.

Check out KKIS to learn more about their amazing work!

Volunteering In Mexico

LKHZ will be traveling to Mexico in a few weeks and making sure to give back while in the area. When in Playa del Carmen, LKHZ will be donating the remaining book donations from last year’s trip to Keep Kids in School Project (KKIS). This organization works hard to both keep kids in school and educate them in English. The English books will be great practice to read.

Also while there, LKHZ will be helping to pack backpacks of school supplies for once the school season resumes in Fall. Stay tuned for pictures from the visit, as well as upcoming projects!

Julio Cesar Sponsorship for 2016

It’s time again for Mayan Children Sponsorships so they can go to school, and Little Known Help Zone has responsored the past sponsored student Julio Cesar to continue for another year of school. This was made possible by generous donations during Bryn Mawr events and through speaking at PETE&C. For $360, Julio will attend school for another year and further his education which would otherwise be impossible.

If you remember, LKHZ has sponsored two students in the past, including Julio Cesar. The other student, Brenda, is graduating this year, but Julio still has a few years in high school to go. LKHZ also donated a bed to Julio’s family in December.

Once Julio finishes school, LKHZ will stop student sponsorships for the moment to create a more comprehensive program that is more inclusive of children in need rather than of specific students.

Julio Cesar Received His Bed

Last night, LKHZ received wonderful news from Mayan Families. Julio received his bed and mattress for Christmas. The bed is beautiful and crafted by the Mayan Families workshop, so there’s a double benefit of employing young boys and helping a family.

This bed was much needed for Julio’s family, 5 people previously shared 2 beds, so this third bed will allow the family to spread out and get better rest.

In addition to sponsoring students, LKHZ contributes to student’s outside needs in hopes of limiting distractions and encouraging more learning at school.

Check out the pictures below!

Christmas Bed Donation

Just in time for Christmas, LKHZ utilized the money from December successes to donate a bed to sponsored student Julio’s family. Right now, the family of 5 shares 2 beds, so this extra bed will be a huge relief for the family. For $170, Julio will receive a bed and a mattress, made by the organization Mayan Families’ workshop (that also commissions other young Mayan students in the trade craft of furniture making, supplying them with a skill and income).

If you would like to give back this holiday season, consider donating a set of sheets for $25 to Julio’s family as well. Comment below or email to learn how to donate.

Happy Holidays!
